Web 2.0 & Language Learning

I think the new media of web 2.0 will have a great impact in language learning . The integration of using ICT in teaching languages is the future …. any thoughts on that?

What about Web 3.0 …?

Second Life & the Internet

Hi all,

I wanted to put this question for everyone, ….

Do you think that Second Life will change the way the Internet works, if yes, how? and will that be better than the way it works now?

Looking forward to all your responses….

Second Life XP

Hi all,

I really enjoyed my first group meeting on SL. Thanks for all those who participated and brought this experience to life. I certainly got to know about the different tools that are available in this virtual world which offer us the opportunity to be creative and innovative. I am fascinated by the way Second Life enables us to create and own any objects that we fancy which could be difficult for us to have in First Life e.g. you could design and build you own house or create your own guitar if you like.

I liked the trial and error method of learning on SL. You are meant to learn by exploring the objects that you can see in the environment around you. Perhaps this could be an important learning method that could be used in various educational settings.

I have found this interesting video tutorial about how to construct objects on Second Life. I hope it is useful…

The ugly face of Second Life

Hi all,

It is reasonable to use anything in a moderate way however when it gets too much, it could turn its ugly face to you. Addiction of anything might not be a healthy indicator of a normal life …

This man has abandoned his First life for his second …

Social Media in Ice cream Language

By the way I found this website very useful as it explains a lot of web 2.0 terminology in simple plain videos.

Who is a “friend” on Facebook..??

I am quite disturbed by what is really meant by “friend” on facebook and how teenagers might perceive this meaning.  It is quite normal to receive a request from someone who you don’t know to add him/her as a “friend”. We might accept their request if we think they look cool or fun but the question is “are they really our friends??”. It seems to me that there are two different definitions to who could be an “online” friend and a “real” friend in life.

I remember when I was at school I used to introduce anyone to my parents as my “friend”.  This is when my dad taught me what it really meant and when I should use it. Did we forget the saying “A friend in need is a friend indeed”?… Well, I don’t think this is what a “Facebook” friend really mean.

It seems that the meaning of this beautiful word has been lost in the cyberspace …

Blogging to Learn – ABB

ABB has introduced to topic of blogging in an easy langauge and an interesting way especially for those new to the phenomenon such as me..:) She identifies waht a blog is and some common terminology used e.g. “blog-o-sphere” etc … I, then just realized that I am a “blogskin”.

ABB defines “reflection” as a process of turning experience into learning and “reflective learning” as an intentional process, where social context and experience are acknowledged, … etc. I think she should have called this process as “spontanous” rather than intentional because this is part of our life learning curve. We tend to learn from our own and other people experiences.

In terms of the 5-stage module which represents the blogging process, the first stage “Establishment” is clear and this is what we have established out the 1st residential day. ABB mentioned that at this stage structured questions are provided; this is when I remembered that JP has given us some as a guide to contributions. I think this is an important part to get everybody started.

I was unaware of what to write about when I first set up my blog and wasn’t sure if I am actaully going to write for my self-reflections or to the outside virtual audience. This is where I stand at the moment; the introspection stage.

I think stimulus is a main factor in the process of the refelctive monologue and dialogue stages to keep students motivated throughout. Having no responses and feeling like writing for yourself could be putting off.  If I am posting for myself so why shall I do it online..!?

I think that I should be at stage 5 by now; responding and commenting on others posts. However, I try to keep up to date by reading posts on other blogs to get the feel for the blogging environment and the way it should work. Is it different from Blackboard?. if not, should it be?

Live video streaming

Hi all,

As I was watching Click on BBC this morning, I was impressed by a new technology of Web 2.0 which allows people to broadcast live videos from their mobile phones and have them online as they record them.

http://qik.com/ is the leading website in the US which allow web users to watch live videos shot by mobile phones. However if you are thinking to do that, then I must say that it is compatible with few phones in the market, one of them is the Nokia N95… thx God I have one :)

I really think that modern mobile phones are bcoming an important player in Web 2.0. Having all this video editing facilities on your phone allow you record, edit and broadcast your video to the web without the need to use a PC.

How great that is..!!??
